Rainbow Delight Collies

Where Collies are just kids with fur

Rainbow Delight Collies is nestled deep in the Adirondack Mountains in Upstate NY.  We began our adventure in collies in the mid 1990's with the purchase of our first companion pet.  We were very much impressed with the collie temperament and our kennel has grown from 1 to 7.  In 2001 we purchased a wonderful show dog and have begun our career in the confirmation show ring.  We expect great things from this little gal, Rainbow Delight's Gold Hill.  All of our dogs go through basic and advanced obedience classes.  Six  of which now have their Canine Good Citizen titles and one has a TDI certification from Therapy Dogs International.  We also play at agility as well as dog sledding.  Collies love to perform regardless if its therapy or playing in the yard.

Our Breeding Philosophy

Our objective with our breeding program is to produce not only top dogs with wonderful temperaments, but to better the breed through responsible breeding of healthy dogs with proper genetic testing. We are now striving to educate owners and breeders that regardless of their own purpose to own a collie that they owe it to the breed to continue with the necessary health provisions. All of our breeding and show stock are now tested for hip and elbow dysplasia, thyroid and heart disease as well as being normal eyed and free of any eye problems.

Here are some links to helpful information on the collie standard and health related issues for the collie.  It is a very good informative site that offers additional links to genetic testing.

Please remember that while the Standard is written to be the basis of what the "perfect" collie should be.  Everyone is different in what they like and how close that want to follow that written standard.  There are also many myths that you can tell Normal Eye collies by the shape of the eye.  That is certainly not so.  Yes many normal eye collies may have a "rounder" eye shape but that has nothing to do with the genetic make-up of the eye, but simply that somewhere along the way a nice normal eye collie had a slightly rounder eye shape and that dogs offspring produced that same eye shape.  The gene for the eye shape was just more dominate than the correct almond shape eye.
